THE
MINORITY ACCESS, INC. BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH ROLE MODEL PROJECT

The
Role Model Project was initiated through a cooperative agreement between the
Office of Minority Health of the U.S.
Department of Health and Human Services and Minority Access, Inc. to
identify institutional and individual role models producing or
supporting minority researchers, particularly in the biomedical
sciences. The rationale is that highlighting these role models
would, through emulation, increase the number of researchers focused
on closing the health disparity gap between minorities and the
general population.
Studies show that certain health risk factors such as heart disease,
cancer, diabetes, hypertension and other diseases adversely affect
minorities to a greater extent than the majority population. The
Role Model Project is dedicated to:
-
Increasing
the pool of minority biomedical researchers
-
Encouraging
colleges and universities to dedicate time and resources to research
on minority health
-
Identifying
institutions that have a successful track record of recruiting,
retaining and producing minority biomedical researchers
-
Recognizing
exceptional minority students, faculty and alumni in the biomedical
field who can serve as role models to others
-
Recognizing
mentors, recruiters and faculty who have contributed to developing
minority biomedical researchers.
-
Providing
networking and learning opportunities for students, faculty and
administrators in the biomedical field
